DR. ANTONIO J. GONZAGA RESEARCH AWARD 2025

Dr. Antonio J. Gonzaga was one of the pillars of research and training in infectious diseases in the Philippines. He was a constant source of encouragement and support for young infectious disease fellows. He pioneered the creation of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Tuberculosis Study Group and the establishment of the TB Research Laboratory of the Philippine General Hospital-Medical Research Laboratory, which generated relevant quality research. The Dr. Antonio Gonzaga Memorial Research Award has been created to celebrate and honor Dr. Gonzaga’s research achievements in the field of infectious diseases.

This year, Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) will be selecting top original studies and case reports to be presented in the PSMID’s Annual Convention to be held on November 18-20, 2025 at SMX Convention Center Manila. The body will be awarding the Top 3 Analytical Studies, Top 3 Descriptive Studies, and Top 3 Case Reports. The remaining top original studies and top case reports will be showcased as Poster Presentation during the said convention on November 18-20, 2025.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

Abstracts can be submitted via the Online Abstract Submission System only. STRICTLY NO EMAILING OF ENTRY. Entries submitted via email will not be entertained. Please submit your abstract through this link: https://abstract.psmid2025.com. Deadline for submission: September 29, 2025, at 23:59H.

Who can submit an abstract?

  • Fellows-in-Training in any PSMID accredited Infectious Diseases Fellowship
  • Recent Graduates of PSMID accredited Infectious Diseases Fellowship
  • Residents-in-Training in any PCP accredited Internal Medicine Residency
  • Residents-in-Training and Fellows-in-Training of other specialties which are accredited in their corresponding society.
  • Healthcare Professional of an accredited society (with at least one PSMID Diplomate or Fellow as co-author)

What can be submitted?

Research studies in the field of relevant infectious diseases can be submitted. Abstracts of a case report or original study (descriptive study, analytical study, or meta-analysis) can be submitted. Studies under embargo by a journal or scientific congress are not eligible. Abstracts where only parts of data were submitted elsewhere are allowed.

Ongoing studies can be submitted. Upon acceptance, latest findings can be included in the final presentation. Multiple submissions of the same study will be rejected. Different studies by the same author are allowed. Contact details are required for communication.

The submitting person must be the presenter of the abstract. Presenters must be listed among authors and ready to explain their role in the research. Up to 5 authors (including presenter) allowed.

Abstracts may not include graphics or pictures. Deadline for editing is September 29, 2025, 23:59H. After this, edits are not allowed. Withdrawals must be in writing. An acknowledgment email will be sent to confirmed submissions.

ABSTRACT SELECTION

The abstract will be screened and evaluated by panelists (Research Committee) based on the following:

ORIGINAL STUDY:

  • Appropriateness of Title and Clarity of Objectives/Research Question (10%) – Statement of primary and secondary questions, pointing out population, interventions and comparisons (if any), and outcomes.
  • Significance and Originality of Study (20%) – Statement of prevalence and significance of condition being studied, and impact on patient’s lives and field of medicine and infectious disease.
  • Methodology (30%) – Statement of general design, study maneuvers, and scope of work.
  • Results and Discussion (20%) – Correct interpretation and synthesis of the results
  • Conclusions (10%) – Clarity and appropriateness based on results
  • Abstract composition (10%) – Clear, concise, and well written

CASE REPORT:

  • Rationale of reporting the case (10%) – Explanation of the importance of case report
  • Case Significance (20%) – Uniqueness, Rarity, and Interesting Factor of the Case
  • Case Presentation (30%) – Completeness of the clinical data, diagnostic work-up, and management, as well as the outcome
  • Case Synthesis (20%) – Discussion of the case in relation to previous literature, its significance, and future impact
  • Conclusions (10%) – Learning points from the case
  • Abstract composition (10%) – Clear, concise, and well written

THE TOP ANALYTICAL STUDIES, DESCRIPTIVE STUDIES, AND CASE REPORTS will be qualified for ORAL PRESENTATION. Remaining top studies will be qualified for POSTER PRESENTATION.

Authors will be notified by the Research Committee on October 10–15, 2025 if they are selected.
